Singer Vijay Prakash acknowledges the influence of his teachers in shaping his musical journey. Growing up in a family of Carnatic musicians, he received training from his grandfather, Shri Lakshmipathy Bhagavathar, as well as his parents, the late Shri K Ramashesha and Smt Lopa Mudra. On Teacher's Day, the renowned singer reflects on the significance of mentors and the continuous process of learning.
Regarding the vast realm of music, Vijay Prakash emphasizes that despite music being composed of only seven notes, there are infinite possibilities and variations. He believes that no musician can master more than a fraction of music's depth, given the diversity of musical traditions globally. He views music as a lifelong learning journey, with endless discoveries awaiting him.
For Vijay Prakash, music not only imparts knowledge but also serves as a conduit to connect with others and the world at large. He values the teachings received from various individuals who shared their expertise with him, shaping his musical progression.
As someone who has served as a judge on numerous music competitions, Vijay Prakash stresses the importance of providing constructive feedback with kindness and appreciation for the emotional essence of music. While acknowledging the technical aspects that can be refined, he values sincerity and heart in musical expression. The new generation today approaches their teachers with a softness due to the dynamics of emotions and imperfection that are present. When I was younger, there was an inherent fear and respect for teachers that seems to have shifted within this current generation. This change allows for respect to be given without the need for fear towards authority figures. I find myself learning from this new perspective as I work to break away from my past habits.
Our growth and development today are not solely based on our conscious learning, but more so on the conscious teaching imparted to us. While I personally struggled to pay full attention to my teachers, only catching about 20 percent of what was being taught, I credit any success I have attained to the unwavering dedication of my teachers in ensuring that their teachings were given with 100 percent focus. Their commitment has shaped who I am today.
